Ostermann Wins Again at All-American Championships

Pacific Palisades, Calif. -- Gitte Ostermann won her third straight match against a ranked opponent to advance to the semifinals of the consolation bracket at the 2003 Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships. Ostermann defeated 97th-ranked Maja Kovacek of Maryland, 7-5, 6-2, Thursday afternoon and will face New Mexico's Emily Marker Friday morning at 9 a.m. Marker is ranked No. 71.

With a win over Marker, Ostermann would advance to the consolation final.

Ostermann, a junior from Luneberg, Germany, is now 6-1 in the tournament. She went 3-0 in the pre-qualifying singles round last weekend and was 2-1 Wednesday with wins over 48th-ranked Melissa Applebaum of Miami and Harvard's Eva Wang, who is ranked No. 51.

"Gitte is doing so well, and it says a lot about her abililty that this is her third straight win over a ranked opponent," NU Coach Scott Jacobson said.

The premier hard court event of the fall collegiate season, the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships features the top players in NCAA Division I tennis. Eight players and four doubles teams from the qualifying round will advance to the tournament's main draw Oct. 9-12 at the Riviera Tennis Club.
