Pluhowsky Moves Up at Bowling World Cup

Tegucigalpa, Honduras - University of Nebraska bowler Shannon Pluhowsky turned in a strong performance during the second round qualifying at the 2003 AMF Bowling World Cup in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, late Monday evening.

Pluhowsky, the two-time U.S. Amateur champion and 2002 Bowling World Cup champion, moved from fifth to fourth in the overall standings with a total pinfall of 2,208 pins (220.8 average) through 10 games. The junior from Phoenix, Ariz., totaled 1,160 pins in Monday evening's five-game session for a 232 average, slicing an 87-pin deficit to just 48 pins halfway through the four days of qualifying.

Marie Ramirez of Costa Rica leads the 62-bowler field, with a pinfall of 2,256 (225.6 average), 17 pins more than Hiroko Shimizu of Japan. Tere Piccini Healey of Mexico, who finished tied for fifth at last year's AMF World Cup in Latvia, is third with 2,227, 19 pins ahead of Pluhowsky's 10-game total.

The women return for another five games of qualifying Tuesday morning and afternoon, while the tournament runs until Saturday, Oct. 4.
