Dallas -- University of Nebraska Will linebacker Demorrio Williams has been named the SBC Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week for games of Sept. 6 in voting by a select panel of media covering the Big 12.
Williams caused back-to-back turnovers on consecutive sacks of Utah State quarterback Travis Cox, and USU never was able to recover in a 31-7 NU triumph on Saturday. Williams and the Blackshirts' defense shut out the opponent in the last three quarters for the second consecutive week. The Beckville, Texas, native had nine tackles, three sacks for 27 yards lost, two forced fumbles, one recovery, one pass breakup, and one quarterback hurry in the nationally televised contest. His three sacks tied the school record for sacks by a linebacker. Williams, who is the first junior college transfer to be elected team captain at Nebraska since at least 1957, was the first Husker at any position to record three sacks in a game since defensive tackle Steve Warren had a trio against Texas A&M in 1999. Williams and the rest of the 18th-ranked Huskers will be in action on Saturday when they take on Penn State. Kickoff for the ABC regionally televised tilt is set for 7 p.m. (CDT).
