Huskers Face Kansas Jayhawks in Big 12 Tournament

Nebraska begins its postseason run at 7:30 p.m. Thursday against Kansas at the Big 12 Tournament in San Antonio, Texas.  The third-seeded Huskers (11-5-3) will take on No. 6 Kansas (11-6-2), for a trip to the tournament semifinals.

 

NU tied Kansas, 1-1, earlier this season in Lawrence, Kan.  Senior Christine Latham scored her monumental 60th career goal, which gave her the Nebraska all-time scoring record with 147 points.

 

The last and only time Nebraska faced Kansas in a Big 12 Tournament game, was  in 2000 when the No. 3 Huskers defeated the Jayhawks, 4-0 in the tournament opener.  NU was the No.1 seed and KU was the eighth seed, and Nebraska went on to win the Big 12 Tournament Crown that season.

 

In 2001, the Huskers were eliminated from the conference tournament in the semifinals by Texas A&M.  Nebraska has won four of the six Big 12 Tournament titles, with the most recent coming in 2000, with a win over the Aggies.

 

Nebraska is 12-2 in conference tournament games, with iyd only two losses coming at the hands of Texas A&M.

 

The Aggies grabbed their second Big 12 regular-season title and No. 1 seed in the tourney after defeating Texas, 2-1, Friday night to take a half-game lead over the Longhorns for the championship.  Oklahoma State took a 3-2 victory over Oklahoma, scoring all three goals in the final six minutes to qualify for its first-ever Big 12 Tournament appearance.

 

Latham led the Huskers in the regular season with 23 points on 10 goals and three assists.  Not far behind the Calgary, Alberta, native is freshman Nikki Baker and senior Kori Saunders with 18 points each on eight goals and two assists.

 

Junior goalkeeper Erin Miller had led the Nebraska defense this season, posting a league-best 0.86 goals-against average and 11 shutouts. 

 

Kansas most recently fell to Missouri, 2-0, in

Columbia, Mo., Friday night.  The Jayhawks have been led this season by freshman Caroline Smith with 25 points on 11 goals and three assists.

 

Meghan Miller has seen the majority of minutes in the net for KU, accumulating a 1.29 goals-against average and 78 saves for the season.
