Lincoln - Jed Morris (Seabrook, Texas) became the fourth Nebraska baseball player selected in the 2002 First-Year Player Draft Wednesday afternoon in New York City, as he was chosen by the Oakland Athletics in the 36th round, No. 1088 overall.
A first-team All-American by Collegiate Baseball and by Baseball Weekly, Morris enters this weekend's Super Regional hitting a team-best .386, while leading the Big 12 in home runs (21), RBIs (81), doubles (26), slugging percentage (.740) and total bases (189). Morris, who became the first catcher in school history to earn All-America honors, has set or tied school records for doubles (26), extra-base hits (48) and sacrifice flies (nine) en route to being selected as the Big 12 Player of the Year by the league coaches.
Morris joins fellow Husker draftees Jeff Leise (Anaheim, seventh round), Shane Komine (Oakland, ninth round) and Waylon Byers (Florida, 23rd round) as NU's draftees this season. Under Coach Dave Van Horn, Nebraska has had at least three draftees in each of the past four seasons, including a Big 12-leading eight selections in 2001.
The Huskers, 45-18 and ranked 10th nationally, play host to Richmond in this weekend's Super Regional, beginning Friday at 1:05 p.m. at Hawks Field All three games are sellouts, as a crowd of over 8,400 is expected, marking the largest crowd to ever see a Husker baseball game in Lincoln.
