Torres Continues to Pace Huskers at Big 12 Meet

College Station, Texas -- Nebraska swimmer Diana Torres qualified for the consolation finals of the 100-yard butterfly Saturday morning at the 2002 Big 12 Championships in College Station, Texas.

The freshman from Bogota, Columbia, swam a 2:06.84 for NU during the fourth and final morning session at the Student Rec Center Natatorium. Torres time placed her sixth in her heat and 16th overall.

In the first heat of the 100-yard freestyle, it was all Nebraska as the Huskers occupied all four entries. Junior Ashley Petersen won the heat (36th overall), finishing in 55.97, while sophomore Amanda Spark touched the wall in 1:01.40 (second in heat, 38th overall). Senior Yasmin Saad swam in the second heat, touching the wall in 54.28 and finishing 34th overall out of 44 competitors.

Junior Laura Landgreen was NUs top finisher in the 200-yard breaststroke, touching the wall in 2:31.56, setting a new personal best. Landgreens time placed her 17th overall. Fellow juniors Catherine Clark (2:47.93) and Kristin Vahle (2:53.35) also finished in 18th and 19th place for the Huskers.

The 1,650-yard freestyle as well as the platform diving segment will be contested this afternoon prior to the final session, which begins at 6:00 p.m.
