Huskers Cruise Past Savannah State

LINCOLN, Neb. ----- Senior John Robinson II scored a career-high 20 points and the Huskers held Savannah State to just 29.4 percent shooting from the field, as Nebraska (7-4) snapped a four-game losing streak with a 66-47 victory over the Tigers Wednesday in front of a season-high 7,528 fans at the Devaney Center.

Robinson finished the first half with six three-pointers, just one shy of the Husker single-game record of seven. He hit one of two shots in the second half, but missed his only three-point attempt and a chance to tie the school record.

Joining Robinson, senior guard Cary Cochran helped the Huskers get out to a quick lead as he hit a three-pointer with 17:08 left on the clock in the first half to give NU a 3-0 lead, one that they would not relinquish. Cochran added another trey just two minutes later and Robinson hit the first of his career-high six treys to put Nebraska ahead 9-0 with 14:30 remaining before the intermission.

A jumper and pair of free throws by senior forward Ross Buckendahl put the lead at eight before sophomore Brian Conklin added a trey of his own. Nebraska finished with 13 three-pointers, the most the Huskers have ever recorded at the Devaney Center, including 11 in the first half.

In the second period, Nebraska was outscored by three, 25-22, as only one player, freshman Corey Simms, scored more than four points in the period. Simms finished with nine points, while junior guard Brennon Clemmons added nine points, eight rebounds, five assists and three steals.

Freshman John Turek added nine rebounds and three blocked shots in his second consecutive start, as he helped the Huskers hold Savannah State to just 29.4 percent shooting from the floor, including 24.1 percent shooting in the first half.

Nebraska opened the largest lead of any game this season in the second half, when Robinson hit his only shot of the second frame, a layup, to put Nebraska ahead by 29 points, 57-28, with 13:27 left to play. But the Tigers (0-12) would not roll over, as they went on a 16-4 run to cut the lead to 17, 61-44, with 3:47 to play.

Nebraska opens Big 12 Conference play on Saturday, Jan. 5, at No. 17/18 Missouri at 12:45 p.m. The game will be season on ESPN Regional and action will be called by Dave Armstrong and Paul Splittorf.
