Lincoln -- The University of Nebraska sends its condolences to all the families involved with the tragedies that occurred in New York and Washington today. After consultation with Chancellor Harvey Perlman, Nebraska Director of Athletics Bill Byrne issued a statement from Philadelphia, Pa., where he was attending the NCAA Division I Championships and Competition Meeting.
Byrne said, "Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by this horrific tragedy. Each one of us has been touched by the events that are unfolding today. We will continue to place the highest priority on the safety of our student-athletes, staff, coaches and fans. We will meet, as we do every week, to go over our safety procedures and athletic event management issues."
The NCAA issued a release today, giving conferences and individual schools the authority to determine whether to play regular-season games this week. Following the NCAA release, Big 12 Conference Commissioner Kevin Weiberg issued a teleconference call this afternoon to discuss league competition and related travel considerations.
It was unanimous that all member schools would postpone volleyball competition for Tuesday and Wednesday, Sept. 11 and Sept. 12. All other competition for Wednesday, Sept. 12, has been cancelled. Non-conference competition involving Big 12 Conference schools scheduled for Thursday and Friday, Sept. 13-14, are pending, and will be left up to each institution's discretion. Thursday's Texas Tech at Texas-El Paso football game is also pending.
The conference directors of athletics will continue discussions on Wednesday, regarding this weekend's competition, which at the University of Nebraska, involves non-conference football, cross country, soccer, golf and conference volleyball contests.
Nebraska's volleyball match with Kansas State, scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 12, has been postponed. It will be up to the participating coaches to reschedule. Nebraska is also slated to compete in the following other events. No determination has been made at this point about possible changes in scheduling for these events.

Saturday, Sept. 15 -- Cross Country, Woody Greeno Invite, home, 10 a.m.

Saturday/Sunday, Sept. 15-16 -- Women's Golf at Minnesota
Sunday, Sept. 16 -- Soccer, vs. Portland, at Portland, 12:15 p.m.
In a related matter, former Head Football Coach Tom Osborne and his wife Nancy, are safe at their residence in Washington, D.C. Mike Osborne confirmed he had spoken with his parents today. Congressman Osborne and his staff evacuated his office, and walked the approximate six blocks to his apartment.
Former Husker center Dave Rimington, who is the President of the Boomer Esiason (Cystic Fibrosis) Foundation, attended the Nebraska - Notre Dame game this weekend and remained in Omaha with his family after the game. His Office was on the 101st floor of the One World Trade Center. He confirmed by phone that his immediate staff was safe.
