Lincoln -- Nebraska football players earned two of the three weekly conference honors Monday, as quarterback Eric Crouch and punter Kyle Larson were named the Southwestern Bell Big 12 Offensive and Special Teams Player of the Week, respectively. It was the fifth time in Crouch's career that he was tabbed the league's player of the week, while it was the first such honor for Larson.
The preseason Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year, Crouch led the Huskers to their 14th consecutive home victory and 16th straight season-opening win, as Nebraska defeated TCU 21-7 in the NACDA Pigskin Classic Saturday. Crouch, who is now 25-5 as a starter, guided the Huskers to a touchdown on NU's first drive of the game and put across the Huskers' second score of the afternoon when he ran in from one yard out to give NU a 13-7 lead in the first quarter.
Crouch finished with 69 yards rushing and one touchdown on a team-high 24 carries while completing 10-of-18 passes for 151 yards. With his solid offensive effort, Crouch became Nebraska's all-time leader in career total offense, as he now has 5,510 total offense yards, passing the former school record of 5,476 total offense yards set by Tommie Frazier from 1992 to 1995. He also was named the Nebraska MVP for the Classic and earned a $5,000 postgraduate scholarship.
On special teams, Larson played a huge role in helping the Husker defense control the line of scrimmage. Larson, a sophomore who had never punted in a collegiate game, boomed eight punts for 386 yards (a 48.6 yards-per-punt average), including a career long of 56. Five of his punts were downed inside the 20-yard line, as TCU started from its own 15, 9, 1, 15 and 18 following Nebraska's first five punts. Of the eight punts on the day, only five were returned, and those went for just 21 yards, leaving Nebraska with a 46.0 net punting average as a team.
Rounding out the honors this week was Oklahoma senior linebacker Rocky Calmus, who was selected the league's defensive player of the week. Calmus had 13 tackles and two fumble recoveries, including one returned for a touchdown, in OU's 41-27 victory over North Carolina. Voting for the league's weekly honors is by a select panel of media covering the Big 12.
