Miami, FL. -- University of Nebraska bowlers Shannon Pluhowsky and Diandra Hyman earned multiple honors at the 39th Annual F.I.Q. Tournament of the Americas in Miami, Fla., last week.
Hyman, who competed in her third Tournament of the Americas championship, bowled in the adult division, earning two gold medals and two bronze medals. Hyman won gold medals in the adult four-player mixed teams and the adult country all events. The bronze medals were won in the adult all events competition and the adult women's doubles. Hyman also came in fifth in the adult women's singles competition and eleventh in the adult mixed doubles competition with teammate Bill Hoffman.
Pluhowsky, who was competing in her first Tournament of the Americas championship, won six gold medals and bowled the highest game in women's competition with a 258. Pluhowsky's gold medals were earned in the junior all events, junior mixed doubles with Andrew Gain, junior women's doubles with teammate Missy Bellinder, junior women's singles, junior four-player mixed teams and the junior country all events competitions.
The 39th Annual F.I.Q. Tournament of the Americas consisted of 158 bowlers from 20 countries competing in 25 events. All 158 bowlers represent countries in South, Central and North America.
Pluhowsky will also be competing in the sixth World Games 2001 Akita in Akita Prefecture, Japan. The bowling tenpin competition will take place August 21-23. Pluhowsky is one of only two bowling competitors representing the United States. Pluhowsky's teammate is former Husker bowler, Tony Manna.
