Lincoln -- The Nebraska volleyball team will have a final fine-tuning session for the 2001 season when it holds the annual Red/White match at the NU Coliseum Saturday, Aug. 18 at 7 p.m. Tickets for the scrimmage are now available for purchase at $4 for adults and $2 for youth and seniors and can be purchased at www.huskers.com or by calling the ticket office at 1-800-8BIGRED.
The Huskers open the season the following weekend at the prestigious State Farm/NACWAA Classic Aug. 24-25 against Hawaii in a rematch of the teams 2000 national semifinals match. NU then plays either national runnerup Wisconsin, or Pacific, the events host.
The defending national champion Huskers, 34-0 last season, were voted No. 1 in the AVCA/USA Today Coaches preseason poll Monday.Nebraska returns AVCA National Player of the Year Greichaly Cepero, AVCA First-Team All-American Laura Pilakowski and AVCA Second-Team All-America selection Amber Holmquist. NU also returns the services of two-time AVCA All-American Nancy Metcalf (formerly Meendering), who sat out last season after training with the U.S. National Team leading up to the 2000 Sydney Olympics, and Jenny Kropp, a first-team All-Big 12 selection in 2000.
