Kearney Distance Runner Signs Letter of Intent to Join NU

Lincoln, Neb. -- Kearney native Luke Garringer, the 2001 Nebraska Class A state champion in the 1,600 and 3,200 meters, has signed a letter of intent to join the Husker track and field team this fall, Nebraska Distance Coach Jay Dirksen announced Tuesday.

"He's had an outstanding season this year," Dirksen said. "He ran well in cross country and on the track. I think he has the potential to be successful at the Division I level, and we're very happy he chose Nebraska."

A 2001 graduate of Kearney High School, Garringer posted personal-best times of 1:57.08 in the 800 meters, 4:19.76 in the 1,600 meters and 9:13.44 in the 3,200 meters during his prep career.

At the 2001 state meet, Garringer notched winning times of 4:21.00 in the 1,600 meters and 9:17.29 in the 3,200 meters. He also finished sixth in the 800 meters (1:57.49). As a junior, Garringer placed third in the 1,600 meters and fourth in the 3,200 meters.

"Luke is a hard worker and he likes to run," Dirksen said. "He's coming out of a good high school program, so he will come in well prepared."

Garringer, who will run cross country for the Huskers this fall, was also the 2000 Nebraska Class A cross country state champion. He finished 4th as a junior in 1999.
