Three-Run Homer Lifts Washington over Huskers

St. George, UTAH -- The 17th-ranked Nebraska softball team managed just two hits against the 12th-ranked Washington Huskies and fell 3-0 in the final game of the Red Desert Classic on Sunday afternoon. UW sophomore Jaime Clark collected a three-run homer in the top of the sixth to give Washington its only runs of the game. With the loss, Nebraska falls to 10-9 on the season and 3-2 in the tournament.

The game was scoreless through six innings when Clark hit her sixth homer of the season, scoring junior Becky Simpson and senior Kelly Hauxhurst. Nebraska freshman pitcher Peaches James, who relieved starter Leigh Ann Walker, was trying to intentionally walk Clark, but Clark was able to reach the pitch and drive in the only scores.

Washington freshman pitcher Tia Bollinger allowed just two hits and struck out seven Husker batters. Walker took the loss for the Huskers.

Nebraska and Washington also squared off in the Arizona State Tournament but the game was called early due to travel situations with the Huskers leading 3-0.

The Huskers will see their first action of the 2001 season in the state of Nebraska on Friday when NU participates in the Creighton Spring Classic in Omaha. Nebraska will face Minnesota at 11:15 a.m. on Friday followed by a 6 p.m. contest against Missouri-Kansas City.
