Manhattan, Kan. - The 16th-ranked Nebraska women's track and field team was unable to top No. 7 Kansas State at the six-team KSU Invitational indoor track and field meet held at Ahearn Field House on Friday. The Wildcats nipped the Huskers by tallying 152.5 points to Nebraska's 141. Nebraska-Omaha finished third with 79.5 points followed by Wyoming (51), Emporia State (50) and Oklahoma State (21).
Nebraska's youth movement served them well as the Huskers claimed five event titles, two by freshmen and two by a sophomore. NU was led by sophomore Shelley-Ann Brown (Pickering, Ontario), who opened the meet with a victory in the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 8.58, and followed with a first-place finish in a personal-best time of 7.53 in the 60-meter dash.
The Huskers were also bolstered by freshmen Ann Gaffigan (Springfield, Ill.) and Na'Tassia Vice (Mesquite, Texas). Gaffigan was the first to cross the line in the 3,000-meter run, finishing in 10:05.77, while Vice took home top honors in the high jump, clearing 5-8. In addition, senior Lesley Owusu (Slough, Berkshire, England) captured first place in the 600-yard run (1:21.33) in her first attempt at the distance.
Meanwhile, sophomore Leann Boerema (Clinton, Iowa), finished third in the shot put with an NCAA provisional qualifying toss of 49-11.
Nebraska's men's team will compete tomorrow starting with the weight throw at noon.
