Lincoln, Neb. -- Nebraska All-American center, Dominic Raiola, announced from his home in Honolulu, Hawaii today, that he will forego his senior season at Nebraska to make himself eligible for the NFL draft. A consensus All-American in 2000, Raiola was one of three finalists for the Outland Trophy Award and one of four finalists for the Lombardi Award. He earned first-team All-America honors this season from the Associated Press, Walter Camp, the Football Writers and the AFCA. Underclassmen are required to petition for the draft by Jan. 12.
Raiola said, "Without question, this was by far the hardest decision I have ever had to make. I have gotten so attached to this University. The players and coaches have done so much for me. I have wonderful memories from Nebraska and I'll always be a Husker. But I feel it is in my best interest to leave at this time. It is certainly not anything against the University or coaches, this is just a lifelong dream for me, and I'm anxious to get started on my NFL career. I will really miss the fans, the University, coaches and especially my teammates. I wish them all the best in the future. I fully intend to finish school as soon as possible."
Raiola is a two-time first-team All-Big 12 honor winner, as Nebraska's starting center the past two years. He also served as a snapper in 1998. A solid student, Raiola earned first-team academic All-Big 12 honors in 1999.
Nebraska Head Coach Frank Solich said, "We are sorry to see Dominic go, but we wish him the best. I am sure he will have a successful NFL career. He has been outstanding for us at the University of Nebraska-one of the best centers we have ever had. His athleticism and his leadership have played an extremely important role in the years that he has played for us at Nebraska."
