Nebraska Women's Golf Signs Three for 2001-02 Season

Lincoln, Neb.--Nebraska women’s golf head coach Robin Krapfl announced Thursday that she has received letters of intent from three recruits for the 2001-02 season.

“We are so excited about this recruiting class,” Krapfl said. “We could not have found three finer young ladies to represent the University of Nebraska. All three are excellent students, their ethic is tremendous and they are talented golfers.”

Beth Anne Cherry will continue her tutelage under a Coach Krapfl next fall. While playing for Lincoln Southeast High School this season, Cherry’s coach was Richard Krapfl, Robin’s husband. Cherry, a two-time Nebraska state high school individual champion, led the Knights to the Class A team title last month. She also was the Lincoln City Champion and won the 2000 junior match play. Cherry’s arrival will give NU two Lincoln natives along with Lincoln High-product Sarah Sasse. Cherry’s parents are Tom and Mary Jo Cherry.

Sara Sackett, a native of Cambridge, Neb., will be one of four Nebraska natives on next season’s roster. Sackett was the 2000 PGA Series Champion at Lochland Country Club in Hastings, Neb., qualifying her for the National PGA Junior Championships, in which she posted a top-20 finish. Sackett was the first girl to medal at a Nebraska boys state high school golf tournament.

Traveling all the way from Aiea, Hawaii, for the 2001-02 campaign will be Merynn Ito. The 2000 Hawaii State High School Champion, Ito qualified for the National PGA Junior Championships by taking the Hawaii PGA Junior Championship title. At the national competition, she earned a top-15 finish. Ito also qualified for the USGA Women’s Public Links Championship, reaching the match play round.

Krapfl, who led NU to its first NCAA Tournament berth last season, said that next year’s senior class will provide valuable leadership to the talented trio.

“All three have the potential to contribute as freshmen,” Krapfl said. “With the hard work each demonstrated this past year, I wouldn’t be surprised if all three started as freshmen. Another quality they bring to the team will be enthusiasm and team spirit. The future of Nebraska women’s golf looks bright.”
