Dallas -- Nebraska's Marcus Witter, who led the Husker men's cross country team to its first title of the season over the weekend, was named the Big 12 Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.
The women's honor went to Baylor's Kara Newton.
Witter helped the Huskers capture the men's title at the Murray Keatinge Invitational in Orono, Maine, on Saturday. The Kearney, Neb., native finished second, covering the 5-mile course in a time of 23:57.2. Witter's runner-up finish was his highest this season and came just two weeks after he ran a personal-best time of 24:46 over 8,000-meters at the Roy Griak Invitational on Sept. 23. In three races this season, Witter has finished in the top five twice, including a fourth-place finish at the Woody Greeno/Nebraska Invitational, the Huskers' first meet of the season.
This weekend Witter and Nebraska will travel to Ames, Iowa, to compete in the 26th Annual Iowa State Memorial Classic. The men's race is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m., followed by the women's race at 11:30 a.m.
