Dallas-Iowa State junior running back Ennis Haywood of Dallas, Texas, Oklahoma senior defensive back J.T. Thatcher of Norman, Okla., and Nebraska senior WB-KR Bobby Newcombe of Albuquerque, N.M., have been chosen SBC Big 12 Conference Football Players of the Week (Offense, Defense, Special Teams) by a select panel of media covering Big 12 football for games played on Sept. 30, 2000.
Haywood rushed for 241 yards on 39 carries and a pair of touchdowns to lead Iowa State to a 31-17 victory at Baylor to lift the Cyclones to their first 4-0 start in 20 years. Haywood's effort tied for 10th on Iowa State's all-time single-game rushing chart. He also snared a pair of passes for 43 yards to post a total of 284 total yards. The 284 total yards ranks eighth on ninth on the all-time ISU single-game charts. Haywood now has 615 yards rushing through four games, an average of 153.8 yards per contest--first in the Big 12 and fourth nationally. He's also fifth nationally with 178.5 all-purpose yards per game.
Thatcher tied a school record with three pass interceptions against Kansas in the Sooners' Big 12 opener-a 34-16 win at Norman last week. He also had six tackles, including four solo stops. Oklahoma advanced to 4-0 on the year and climbed into 10th in the AP national poll and 12th in ESPN/USA TODAY. The OU standout also knotted Aaron Humphrey's (Texas vs. Rutgers, 1997) Big 12 record for single game pass interceptions with his performance against KU.
Newcombe set a Nebraska school record and tied a Big 12 record with a 94-yard punt return against Missouri Saturday. His return, the fourth punt return for a TD in his career (three in regular-season play and one in the 2000 Fiesta Bowl), broke the NU school mark of 92 yards set by Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Rodgers in 1971. Rodgers was on hand to see Newcombe's return as the former was being honored for his induction into the College Football Hall of Fame. Newcombe had three punt returns for 100 total yards and had a pass reception for 18 yards. He now ranks sixth in school history with 675 career punt return yards, averaging 18.24 yards per punt return.
