NU Ranked Sixth in USA Today/AVCA Coaches Preseason Poll

Lincoln -- The Nebraska volleyball team ranked sixth in the USA Today/AVCA Coaches preseason poll released Monday. The Huskers, who return four starters from their 1999 that finished 27-6 overall and 17-3 in the Big 12 Conference, received 1055 total points and one first-place vote.

The No. 6 ranking represents the Huskers's lowest preseason AVCA standing since 1993 when they were ranked No. 7.

NU, which captured the 1999 Big 12 championship, will travel a difficult road on its quest for a third straight league title. Nebraska will face ranked opponents on three consecutive weekends to open the 2000 season. The Huskers will play host to 13th-ranked Colorado State in the U.S. Bank Tournament Sept. 2, at the NU Coliseum before facing preseason No. 1 UCLA and No. 20 Michigan State, Sept. 8-10, at the Notre Dame Tournament. NU then returns home to open its Big 12 Conference slate Sept. 13 with Texas in Lincoln.

Overall, Nebraska will face seven ranked foes during the 2000 season. Others include Kansas State (No. 17), Texas (No. 18), Texas A&M (No. 19) and Baylor (No. 21).

Penn State, the 1999 NCAA national champion, received a No. 2 ranking and 10 first-place votes.
