Husker Track Athletes Compete at Junior Olympics

Denton, Texas - Several members of the University of Nebraska track and field team competed at the USA Track and Field Junior National Championships at the University of North Texas over the weekend. All athletes competing in the meet had to meet qualifying standards, be between the ages of 14 and 19 and be a U.S. citizen.

Emily Waibel, a native of Tulsa, Okla., finished fourth in the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 13.65. Waibel advanced to finals after finishing third in her heat (13.73) and fifth overall in the preliminaries. As a freshman competing for the Huskers, Waibel placed fourth at the Big 12 Championships (13.55), and ran a personal-best 13.48 on May 27 in a quadrangular with Indiana State, Kansas State and Wichita State.

Meanwhile, freshmen James De Bruhl (Ontario, Calif.) and Lucas Bauman (Beatrice, Neb.) competed in the 800-meter run. De Bruhl finished seventh overall in a time of 1:55.95. De Bruhl qualified for the finals by finishing fifth in his heat in 1:53.27, while Bauman was close on his heels finishing sixth (1:53.70), just missing the cut.

Other Huskers competing at nationals included freshman pole vaulter Eric Eshbach (Orange, Texas), who no-heighted and freshman Amanda Stahlnecker (Omaha, Neb.), who finished sixth in her heat in the 400-meter hurdles (1:04.86), missing the final round.
