Minneapolis - For just the fourth time in school history, two Nebraska baseball players earned All-America honors in the same season, as Collegiate Baseball released its All-America team Friday. Sophomore pitcher Shane Komine (Honolulu, Hawaii) was chosen as a first-team All-American, while senior catcher Justin Cowan (Tumwater, Wash.) garnered third-team laurels.
The Big 12 Player of the Year, Komine captured All-America honors by posting a 10-3 record with a 2.20 earned-run average during the season. The only Big 12 player chosen for the first team, he led the Big 12 and was among the national leaders with a school-record 142 strikeouts entering Friday's NCAA Regional contest against Butler. He recorded seven double-figure strikeout performances in 2000 and tied NU's single-game record with 17 K's against Kansas on April 8. He walked just 26 batters and held hitters to a .206 batting average in 110 1/3 innings of work. This marks the second first-team honor this season for Komine, who was also selected by USA Today/Baseball Weekly last week.
Cowan, one of 10 semifinalists for the Johnny Bench Award, presented to the nation's top catcher, has batted .383 with nine homers and 70 runs batted in this season. A first-team All-Big 12 selection, he added 22 doubles, seven stolen bases and scored 53 runs, as Nebraska compiled a 47-15 record entering today's first-round contest against Butler. Cowan is also among the nation's top backstop performers, recording a .988 fielding percentage and throwing out 35 percent of runners attempting to steal (11-of-31).
This season marked the first time since 1993 and only the fourth time in school history (also 1955, 1985 and 1993) that two Huskers earned All-America honors in the same campaign.
The Huskers open NCAA Regional action against Butler (31-26), beginning at 1 p.m. The radio broadcast can be heard on the Pinnacle Sports Network (including 1400AM-KLIN) and on the internet at www.huskerwebcast.com
