Lincoln - After completing their last regular season match-up on Saturday be defeating Kansas State 5-4, the University of Nebraska women's tennis team will now turn their attention to the Big 12 conference championships being held in Kansas City this weekend at the Plaza Tennis Center.
By virtue of their win against Kansas State, and Kansas' losses to Texas A&M and Texas over the weekend, the Huskers have earned a No. 6 seed and will face the No. 11 seed, Texas Tech, in the first round at 2:30 p.m. on Friday. The two teams have already met once this season with the Huskers defeating the Red Raiders 8-1 at home on March 24.
The winner of the Texas Tech vs. Nebraska match-up will face No. 3 seed Texas A&M on Saturday. Earlier this season the Aggies ended Nebraska's 14 match winning streak when they defeated the Huskers 5-4. If the Huskers move on to the second round they will look to avenge a loss in a match that they could have won.
Nebraska head coach Scott Jacobson said that if his team fairs well at Big 12 championships then they will be able to accomplish some of their pre-season goals. "At the beginning of the season we set some goals. We wanted to finish in the top half of our conference, and we have done that. We wanted to finish ranked in the top-50 and if we do well, we will be able to accomplish that. And finally we set a goal to make the NCAA tournament, and if we make a good showing at Big 12's we will be able to accomplish that goal too."
