Huskers Split Squad for Three California Meets This Week

Lincoln-The Nebraska track and field team will split its squad between the Mt. Sac Relays in Walnut, Calif., the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational in Claremont, Calif., and the Long Beach Invitational in Long Beach, Calif., this weekend. Several Huskers may also participate in the UTEP/Sierra Medical Invite in El Paso, Texas, on Saturday.

"There's advantages and disadvantages at each site and location," Nebraska Head Coach Gary Pepin said. "We've tried to cater to the needs of the athletes. We want them to see good competition at good facilities with good weather."

Among those not competing this week are high jumper Shaun Kologinczak, sprinter Chris Chandler and jumper Sheldon Hutchinson, who is resting a sore hamstring.

At last season's Long Beach Invitational, NU's Melissa Price claimed the hammer throw title (190-4), while Stella Klassen placed second in the 400 meters (53.63).

Angie Prebyl will look to defend her triple jump title at the Pomona-Pitzer meet after winning the event last year with a mark of 39-7 1/4. Tony Smith placed second in the 1,500 meters (3:53.75) at the meet a year ago.

In the javelin, Cassi Morelock placed second at the Mt. Sac Relays in 1999, with a mark of 169-3, while Hutchinson placed second in the long jump with a leap of 24-0 1/4.
