Dallas -- Nebraska sophomore pitcher Shane Komine has been named the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Louisville Slugger National Pitcher of the Week and the Phillips 66 Big 12 Conference Pitcher of the Week for his performance against Kansas this past weekend. It is the second time this season Komine has landed conference pitcher-of-the-week honors (March 27) and the first time in his career that he has been honored as the national pitcher of the week. Nebraska leads the Big 12 with three conference pitchers of the week this season.
Komine, a native of Honolulu, Hawaii, and the league leader in strikeouts per game with 12.3, tied a school record by striking out 17 batters in a 9-3 win over Kansas on Saturday. Komine allowed just five hits and one walk through eight innings to tie the school record set by Brent Friehauf in 1983.
Komine's performance helped Nebraska snap a four-game skid in conference play and sparked the Huskers to a sweep over Kansas. The 1999 Big 12 Freshman of the Year struck out eight of the first 11 batters he faced and struck out the side in the first and third innings. He held KU hitless in four of the eight innings he pitched.
His 17 strikeouts put him in a tie for fifth on the Nebraska single-season strikeout chart with 87, surpassing his total of 79 as a freshman. The sophomore also moved into 11th on the career charts with 166 career strikeouts. Komine is now 5-3 this season with a 1.98 ERA and is holding opponents to a .188 batting average in 63.2 innings. He has also held base runners in check, allowing just four stolen bases.
The last Husker pitcher to earn national pitcher-of-the-week honors was Chad Wiles last season.
