Huskers Slam 10 Hits For 7-3 Win Over Baylor

Lincoln -- A pair of Huskers went deep Sunday to lift the Nebraska softball team to a 7-3 win over Baylor at the Husker Softball Complex. Junior Jamie Fuente hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the first and senior Alice Brewer added a solo shot in the fourth to give Nebraska the weekend sweep of the Bears. Nebraska improved to 29-16 on the season and 6-0 in Big 12 play with the win.

Nebraska used all three of its rotation pitchers Sunday with junior Penny Cope getting the start. The Husker offense gave her a three-run cushion early. With two out in the bottom of the first, Jennifer Lizama singled to left field. Freshman Amber Burgess also added a single to put two runners on. Fuente came up against Baylor starter Sarah Caudle and sent her pitch over the center field fence for the 3-0 lead. Fuente passed Lizama for the team lead with her eighth homer of the year and fourth of the last seven games. After Baylor scored a single run in the top of the third, Nebraska would post another three-run inning in the fourth. Brewer hit a one-out homer to left field, her first of the year, for the first run of the inning. Amanda Buchholz then slugged one of her two doubles on the day and scored a play later when Kim Ogee doubled to center. After Taylor advanced Ogee to third, Lizama knocked a single up the middle to score Ogee and put NU up 6-0.

Baylor would begin to whittle away at the Huskers' lead in the top of the fifth. After Stacey Hundley reached on an error, Ryan Stukel hit a one-out homer to right to pull the Bears within three. Leigh Ann Walker came on in relief of Cope following the homer and ended the inning with a fly out and a ground out, but got herself into some trouble in the sixth. Walker walked the bases loaded before striking out Stukel, who hit Baylor's homer earlier. Nebraska added its seventh run in the sixth inning when Lizama hit a sacrifice fly that scored Buchholz from third. Baylor made a late rally, loading the bases in the seventh on Walker. Head coach Rhonda Revelle sent in Voss with no outs and the bases loaded in the seventh and she got a pair of ground outs and a strikeout to pickup her second save of the season. The save was also the eighth of her career moving her into fourth in Husker history. Cope collected the win after surrendering four hits and two earned runs in four innings pitched. Buchholz and Lizama each recorded two hits, with Lizama hitting in two runs and Buchholz scoring two.

The win was the 14th straight over Baylor, who has never won in Lincoln. The win also kept alive NU's home winning-streak which moved to 14 games.

Nebraska will continue its homestand on Tuesday with a doubleheader against Missouri-Kansas City beginning at 4 p.m. The Huskers will travel to the state of Oklahoma next weekend for a crucial doubleheader against Oklahoma on Friday. The Sooners are the only other undefeated Big 12 team
