Lincoln -- The Nebraska softball team started a new winning streak on Saturday afternoon with an 8-0 run-rule of Baylor at the Husker Softball Complex. The Huskers, who lost a 14-game winning streak with a loss against Creighton on Thursday, stretched their home winning streak to 13 games. Nebraska improves to 28-16 on the season and 5-0 in Big 12 Conference play.
The Huskers sent All-American Jenny Voss to the hill and she got in some trouble early, putting runners on first and second with two outs. But Voss got the last out to thwart the Bears' efforts. Baylor pitcher Joni Miller wasn't as lucky. After a Kim Ogee walk, a Ginger Taylor sacrifice bunt and a Jennifer Lizama single, junior Jamie Fuente homered to center field to put NU on top 3-0. The homer was the seventh of the year for Fuente to tie her for the team lead with Lizama and was also her fourth homer in the last 13 games. In the top of the second, Voss surrendered two walks and a single to load the bases with two outs. But Voss got Ryan Stukel to fly out to end Baylor's only threat. Nebraska added to its lead in the fourth inning when Fuente hit a one-out single to center. Jenifer Williams then doubled to right field to put a pair of runners in scoring position. Voss then helped her cause with a base-clearing triple, the first of her career, that put NU up 5-0. Brewer kept the scoring going with a squeeze bunt that scored Voss from third. Amanda Buchholz continued the fourth with a single and after stealing second, scored on Kim Ogee's hit which was misplayed by Baylor's second baseman. Nebraska ended the game early in the fifth with a single run. Lizama drew a lead off walk and was pinch ran for by Penny Cope. Amber Burgess collected her only hit of the game, an infield single, that left runners at first and second. A Fuente walk then loaded the bases with no outs. After a Williams' strike out, Voss singled to left center to bring in Cope for the game-ending run.
Voss became NU's second 10-game winner of the season with the five-hit shutout. She also led the Huskers at the plate, along with Fuente, with a 2-for-3 performance and three runs batted in. Fuente went 2-for-2 with three runs batted in and two runs scored.
Nebraska will face Baylor again on Sunday in a 1 p.m. contest at the Husker Softball Complex. The game can be heard live on campus station KRNU (90.3 FM).
