Huskers Fall To Ragin' Cajuns In Seventh

Columbus, Ga. --- The No. 23 Nebraska softball scored six runs in the first inning but failed to add another as No. 15 Louisiana-Lafayette came from four back to upend the Huskers, 7-6, Friday on the first day of competition at the NFCA Leadoff Classic. Heavy downpours postponed NU's second contest against No. 24 Hofstra until 8 a.m. (central) on Saturday. Nebraska and Hofstra were in the top of the third with no score.

Louisiana-Lafayette took the early lead with a pair of runs in the top of the first with a two-run homer by Tiffany Clark. Nebraska answered with its largest single inning of the year, scoring six in the bottom of the first. Jennifer Lizama and Kim Ogee led off with walks and after Amber Burgess and Lizama switched places on the basepaths, Jamie Fuente lined a double down the left field line to score two. Jenifer Williams then was hit by a pitch and Leigh Suhr singled the bases loaded to bring up Ginger Taylor. Taylor collected a clutch single that scored another pair making it a 4-2 game. Two batters later, with two out and the bases loaded once again, Lizama drew her second walk of the inning, this time forcing around a run. Ogee gave Nebraska its sixth run of the inning with a single to left center to score Taylor. The Cajuns pulled with two in the top of the fourth on another big hit by Clark, this time a triple. LLU tied it up in the top of the fifth following four singles and a pitching change bringing in Penny Cope in relief of Jenny Voss. Nebraska got a runner as far as second in the third and fifth but failed to bring either in. Louisiana-Lafayette broke the 6-6 tie in the top of the seventh when Kim Dunlap lined a two-out double to left field. Dunlap scored the eventual game winner on the next at bat when Alana Addison hit a similar double to make it 7-6. Nebraska made a final effort in the bottom of the seventh when Leigh Suhr hit a single, stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball. But Suhr was left stranded at third when Brewer flew out to end the Husker rally. Cope took the loss to drop to 2-2 on the year. Taylor led the Huskers with a 3-for-4 performance. Ogee, Fuente and Suhr each added two hits apiece. With the loss, Nebraska fell to 5-7 on the year.

Lizama had just hit a one-out triple in the top of the third before rain postponed the scoreless Hofstra game until Saturday.

After the Hofstra game at 8 a.m., Nebraska will finish pool play with a 9 a.m. matchup against Cal State-Northridge. At the conclusion of pool play, teams will be assigned to one of three brackets for tournament play.
