Phoenix, Ariz. -- The Nebraska softball team fell to 1-5 on the season Sunday after getting run-ruled, 8-0, to Cal State Fullerton and losing 7-2 to No. 21 Stanford at the Fiesta Bowl Tournament at the Rose Mofford Sports Complex.
Missed opportunities doomed Nebraska in the first game. The Huskers left 10 batters stranded in five innings of play leading to the 8-0 run-rule by Cal State Fullerton. Fullerton opened the game with a run in the first off a double and a single. In the second, Jessica Maloney connected on a two-out pitch and sent it over the left field fence with one runner on base, making it a 3-0 game. The Titans added a fourth run in the third when pitcher Jodie Cox singled to center field to score Yasmin Mossadeghi from third. Nebraska starting pitcher Leigh Ann Walker was relieved by Lori Tschannen with two out in the third. Tschannen gave up four runs on three hits in the bottom of the fourth to give the Titans the run rule.
Nebraska did something in its second game of the day it hasn't been able to do since the five-game losing streak started, and that was score in the first inning. But Stanford also scored in their half of the inning to even out the score. The Huskers took their second lead of the game in the fourth when Jamie Fuente hit a solo homer, the second of her career. Stanford answered again, this time on a Jenni Shideler three-run homer. The Cardinal added three in the bottom of the sixth to seal the 7-2 win and hand Jenny Voss her third loss of the year.
The 13th-ranked Huskers will travel to Las Vegas, Nev., next weekend for the UNLV Classic 2000.
