Kick-In-A-Can Food Drive

Lincoln --The University of Nebraska, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and the University Bookstore are sponsoring the 16th Annual Kick-In-A-Can Food Drive this Saturday. Fans are asked to bring canned goods to the game to help fight hunger and support the Omaha and Lincoln Food Banks. The most needed items include tuna, beef stew, canned fruit and peanut butter. Volunteers from Alpha Phi Alpha, Alpha Kappa Alpha and Alpha Phi Omega will collect donations outside Memorial Stadium on game day. Fans who forget to bring a can may Kick-In-A-Buck.

Veterans' Salute
On Saturday, Nov. 6, prior to the kickoff of the Texas A&M football game, a Veterans' salute will take place. After the national anthem, a short pregame ceremony will take place on the field to honor those who served their country.

Varner tribute to take place prior to kickoff
In addition to the salute, a moment of silence will be taken to honor D.B. "Woody" Varner, former chancellor and president of the University of Nebraska. Varner, 82, passed away Oct. 30, following a lingering illness. He came to the university from Michigan in 1970 to assume the duties of NU central administration. The CEO position at that time was called chancellor and later the title was switched to president. He served for seven years before leaving the position of president in 1977 to become chairman of the NU Foundation. Varner spearheaded the fundraising drive that resulted in the construction of the Lied Center for Performing Arts. Following his official retirement in 1987, the NU Central Administration building was named the D.B. and Paula Varner Hall.
