Waco, Texas -- Senior Mandy Monson, a 6-0 outside hitter from Wallace, Neb., had one of the best offensive performances of her career to lead the 12th-ranked Huskers past Baylor, 15-10, 15-5, 15-8, in Waco, Texas, Saturday night. Monson hit a season-best .632, recording 12 kills on 19 swings to lead Nebraska. She also recorded a match-high 12 digs as Nebraska improved to 14-4 and 6-2 in the Big 12.
The Huskers trailed 7-0 in the first game after committing four hitting errors and allowing two ace serves. However the Huskers regrouped after a timeout and answered with a 15-3 run to storm past the Bears, 15-10. Nebraska hit just .167 in the first game, but held the Bears to negative .026 hitting.
After notching the first game, the Huskers got back on track, hitting .316 and .404 in the second and third frames, respectively. Nebraska used seven blocks in the second frame to run nine straight points to close out the game after leading, 6-5. The Huskers continued to roll in the third frame, jumping out to a 6-1 lead, before Baylor tied the game at 6-6. The Huskers bounced back to post a 9-2 run to close out the match and improve to 8-0 all-time against the Bears.
Nebraska held the Bears to a season-low .067 hitting percentage, while finishing the match with a .306 hitting percentage. It was the fourth time in six matches Nebraska has hit over .300.
Junior All-American Nancy Meendering had a match-high 13 kills for the Huskers, while junior Angie Oxley and freshman Amber Holmquist each added nine kills. Oxley and Holmquist combined for a .489 hitting percentage as the two had just one hitting error apiece. Holmquist and Meendering each had a team-best seven blocks.
For the Bears, Kia Young and Sunny Nicholas had 11 and 10 kills, respectively
