Lincoln -- The Nebraska men's and women's cross country teams traveled to University Park, Pa. to compete in the National Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 9.
The No. 17 women's team finished fourth with 79 points, six points behind Big 12 opponent Baylor. Nebraska was without their top runner this season, Michelle Brooks, who did not travel because of illness. North Carolina State won the event with a team score of 44 points.
Jaime Pauli (Milbank, S.D.) led Nebraska with a ninth-place finish in a career-best time of 17:54 over the 5,000-meter course. Jeannette Zimmer (Port Orchard, Wash.), consistently one of the Huskers' top runners, finished 11th in 17:57. Kathryn Handrup (Aurora, Neb.) finished 18th in 18:09, followed by Jaimie Kruger (Pierce, Neb.), who took 20th in 18:12. Mirjana Glisovic (Gornji Milanovac, Yugoslovia) ran a solid race finishing 26th in 18:23. Melinda Oliver (Carroll, Neb.) took 28th in a time of 18:24, while sophomore Jenna Lucas (Rapid City, S.D.), filling in for Brooks, finished 33rd (18:39).
Sherri Smith, who was running unattached, took first in 17:20.
Facing tough competition, including the third-ranked team in the nation, North Carolina State, Nebraska's men's team placed fourth, finishing with 105 points. North Carolina State took first with 15 points, the lowest possible score. The Wolfpack placed eight runners in the top 10, including taking the top seven places.
Junior Marcus Witter (Kearney, Neb.) was the first runner to cross the finish line, who did not compete for North Carolina State. For the third time in as many races this fall, Witter led the Nebraska squad with an eighth-place finish in 26:02. Freshman Mike Kamm (Bellevue, Wash.), who has been one of NU's top runners this season, covered the 5.2-mile course in 26:33, good for 16th place. Aaron Carrizales (Morrill, Neb.) finished 25th (26:47) followed by Jed Barta (Idaho Falls, N.D.), who crossed the line in 27:01, placing him 33rd. Jared Carlson (Kearney, Neb.) finished 43rd in 27:21, while James DeBruhl (Ontario, Calif.) took 51st in 27:44. Rounding out the scoring was freshman Phillip Davis (Waterdown, S.D.), who finished 60th in 28:07.
North Carolina's Chan Pons took first in 25:17.
The Huskers' next meet will be Saturday, Oct. 16, when they travel to Hays, Kan. for the Tiger Invitational.
