Minneapolis, Minn. - The Nebraska women's cross country team faced top competition, including eight teams ranked in the top 25 of the FinishLynx Preseason Poll, on Saturday, Sept. 25 at the Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis, Minn. Also included in the field were Big 12 opponents Iowa State, Kansas and Missouri, which gave Nebraska a glimpse of what conference competition will be like.
The Husker women finished fifth (190 points), only one of two unranked teams to finish in the top 10. Missouri (4th) was the only Big 12 team to finish higher than Nebraska. Sixteenth- ranked Arizona State won the event (49).
Michelle Brooks was again Nebraska's top finisher, completing the 5,000-meter course in 18:09. Helping the trio was senior Jaime Pauli, who finished 22nd in 18:19. The event was won by Duke freshman Sheela Agrawal in 17:31.
The men's team also faced tough competition including seventh-ranked Providence, which won the team title last year. Nebraska finished 16th with 391 points, ahead of Big 12 teams, Iowa State (21st) and Kansas (23rd). Wisconsin won the event with 86 points.
Marcus Witter was Nebraska's top finisher, completing the course in 25:11, good for 27th place. Freshman Mike Kamm ran a solid race for the Huskers finishing 63rd in 25:46, followed closely by Aaron Carrizales (71st, 25:49).
The Huskers will travel to Emporia, Kan. On Saturday Oct. 1, to compete in the Emporia State Invitational.
