Former Husker Advances at USA Championships

Eugene, Ore. -Opening day of the USA Track and Field Championships at the historic Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon, produced mixed results for the Huskers and former Husker competitors.

Former Husker Meka Rembert finished ninth overall in the 400-meter hurdles after finishing fourth in her heat. Rembert ran the hurdles in 57.25, and has qualified for the semi-finals to be held on Friday, June 25 at 7:04 p.m. (CDT). Rembert will need to qualify for Saturday's finals tomorrow. Saturday's race will determine which three Americans will represent the USA at the World Championships in Seville, Spain.

Stella Klassen (Henderson, Neb.) ran the 400-meter dash in 54.19 to finish seventh in her heat and 18th overall. Klassen's time did not qualify her for the semi-finals of the event. Baylor's Yulanda Nelson won the race after sprinting to the finish in 51.99.

Melissa Price (Anaheim, Calif.) and Erin Wibbels (Central City, Neb.) competed in the hammer throw and finished seventh and 15th respectively. Price tossed the hammer 199-11 and Wibbels threw 184-6.

Travis Grant, a former Husker, competed in the 100-meter preliminaries tonight, but could not cross the finish line in time to qualify for the finals. Grant ran a 10.40 to finish third in his heat and 18th overall. The top 16 sprinters will advance to the semi-finals. Tim Montgomery, of Asics, had the fastest time of 10.15.

The Huskers are back in action tomorrow as Dalhia Ingram takes on double duty competing in the long and triple jumps. The triple jump is scheduled to begin at 5:20 p.m. (CDT) and the long jump at 6:55 p.m. Shane Lavy will attempt to earn a spot on the U.S. squad in the high jump. The event is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Former Husker and 10-time All-American Tressa Thompson competes in the shot put at 6:20 p.m.
