Frank Sevigne Track Invite sees 70 NCAA marks;

LINCOLN, NEB. -- Nebraska senior high jumper Shane Lavy and Georgia sprinter Debbie Ferguson were named the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitationals outstanding performers Saturday following standout performances.

Lavy won the high jump on Friday with an automatic NCAA qualifying mark of 705, giving him the nations third-best mark in the country this year. Lavy, who just missed breaking the meet record of 705.25 set in 1985, won the meets high jump title for the third time in his career, becoming just one of 12 athletes to win three Frank Sevigne titles in its 25-year history. He joined former Husker Rhonda Blanford as the only athletes to win Frank Sevigne titles during their freshman and senior seasons.

Ferguson won the womens outstanding peformer award after breaking the Bob Devaney Sports Center track record in the 60-meter dash twice in two days. Ferguson clocked a provisional qualifying time of 7.34 seconds in Fridays preliminaries and an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 7.29 to win Saturdays finals. Her time of 7.29 is tied for tops in the nation this year.

Overall, Saturdays competitors set 27 NCAA qualifying marks, including 23 provisional and four automatic marks, to bring the meet total to 70 qualifying marks (55 provisional and 12 automatic).

Nebraska had several outstanding performances for the weekend. Stella Klassen, a junior from Henderson, Neb., won the 800-meter run with a provisional qualifying mark of 2:07.92, the fourth-best indoor mark in Division I this season. Junior Dalhia Ingram posted provisional marks in both the long and triple jumps for the second time in as many weeks. Her mark of 2003.75 in Fridays long jump and jump of 4208 in Saturdays triple jump bettered her qualifying marks from a week ago to earn second place in both events.

Husker senior Jack Melson posted his first qualifying mark of the season in the shot put Saturday with a personal-best throw of 5911.75 (18.28 meters) to finish fourth in the event. Freshman Becky Beachler set an indoor personal best in the shot put with a provisional qualifying mark of 5011 (15.52 meters).

Some of the other automatic qualifying marks set on Saturday included Michael Blackwood of Oklahoma in the 400-meter dash (46.55), Brad Snyder of South Carolina in the shot put (6306.75), and Reese Hoffa of Georgia in the shot put (6305.50).
