NU Tops Missouri in Swimming and Diving Dual

Lincoln, Neb. -- The Nebraska men's and women's swimming and diving teams each picked up conference dual victories, handing Missouri a pair of losses as NU honored 12 upperclassmen on Senior Day at the Bob Devaney Sports Center Saturday afternoon.

On the women' side, eighth-ranked Nebraska (6-3, 3-0) won the first ten events before entering exhibition competitors. NU would go on to win 14 of 16 events overall, paving the way for a 189-106 victory over the Tigers (2-3, 1-2).

Therese Alshammar and Terrie Miller each had a hand in three victories for NU. Alshammar touched the wall first in the 50- (23.52) and 100- (51.52) yard freestyle, while Miller was victorious in both the 100- (1:03.07) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:18.79). In the 200-yard medley relay, Alshammar and Miller teamed with Christine Troy and Helene Muller to win the event in a time of 1:46.33.

Other NU event winners on the women's side included Beth Hunsicker (1,650-yard freestyle, 17:16.68), Emma Johnson (200-yard freestyle, 1:52.15), Shandra Johnson (100-yard backstroke, 57.39), Sara Jowsey (200-yard butterfly, 2:05.55), Sasha Van Hamburg (200-yard backstroke, 2:05.04) Destiny Lauren (400-yard IM, 4:26.36), Tammie Bernth (one-meter diving, 262.27) and Molly McDonald (three-meter diving, 259.87).

In men's action, the 15th-ranked Nebraska (7-2, 3-0) squad won 13 of 16, easing to a 171-120 win over the Tigers (4-2, 1-2).

Senior Lincoln High graduate David Foster, competing in his last collegiate competition at the Bob Devaney Sports Center, secured victories in the 100-yard backstroke (50.89) and 100-yard butterfly (49.96), while also swimming the backstroke leg on the winning 200-yard medley relay (1:31.55).

Seniors Eric Rasser, Josh Mathias and Danny Bergman were also double event winners for NU. Rasser posted victories in the 1,000-yard freestyle (9:39.67) and 200-yard backstroke (1:52.12), while Mathias won the 200- (1:39.64) and 500- (4:39.09) yard freestyle events. Bergman said good-bye to the Bob Devaney Sports Center by sweeping the one- (355.80) and three- (372.67) meter springboard competitions.

Other event winners for NU included Anthony Rogis (50-yard freestyle, 21.22; 100- yard freestyle, 45.88), Valery Kalmikovs (200-yard breaststroke, 2:04.52) and Michael Windisch (200-yard butterfly, 1:51.45).
