University of Nebraska gymnasts Jason Hardabura (Oakville, Ontario) and Martin Fournier (St. Hubert, Quebec) will be traveling to Burlington, Ontario, for the Men's Elite Canada Meet this weekend. The competition will take place at the Burlington Boys Gymnastics Club on Friday and Saturday evening and is the second of two meets used to select members of the Canadian National Team. The other was the Canadian National Championships held last May.
Hardabura, an NCAA qualifier in the all-around last season, has been a member of the Canadian Senior National Team since 1993. Hardabura did not compete at last year's Elite Canada Meet, but placed seventh in 1996 and fourth in 1995. A sophomore at Nebraska, he won the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation floor exercise title in 1998. This weekend's meet is a return home for Hardabura, who trained at the Burlington Boys Gymnastics Club under former Canadian National Team Coach Dave Arnold. Hardabura missed the Canadian Championships with a hand injury, but could earn a place on the National Team with a strong showing this weekend.
Fournier, a member of the Canadian National Team for the past two years, is beginning his first season at Nebraska. Fournier finished 13th at the Canadian National Championships in May and placed 13th at the 1997 Elite Canada Meet.
Hardabura, Fournier and the rest of the Huskers open the 1999 season on Jan. 22 when NU travels to the Rocky Mountain Open in Colorado Springs, Colo.
