Nebraska Scores 231.05 in victory over Lobos and Sooners.
The Huskers moved to No. 1 after posting a season-high score of 231.05 to defeat Oklahoma (227.80) and New Mexico (222.30) in Lincoln on March 1. NU was led by freshman Jason Hardabura, who took first place in the all-around with a 57.975. Hardabura's score is the highest all-around total since former NU all-around national champion Richard Grace scored a 58.375 at the 1995 NCAA Championships. The freshman set career-high scores in five of the six events, including a second-place finish on the still rings (9.775) and a third-place finish on the horizontal bar (9.80).
Hardabura was one of three Nebraska gymnasts who established career-high scores in the win. Sophomore Derek Leiter finished second to Hardabura in the all-around with a 57.60, including a first-place finish on vault (9.80) and third-place showings on both floor exercise (9.70) and pommel horse (9.775). Junior Marshall Nelson also finished with a personal-best score of 57.05, the third consecutive meet Nelson had bettered his all-around mark. The defending NCAA champion on the parallel bars and horizontal bar, Nelson took top honors on the floor exercise (9.75) and on the parallel bars (9.925), while finishing second on the horizontal bar (9.825).
