Wichita State Knocks Off Huskers, 9-4

By NU Athletic Communications
Lincoln - Wichita State made its first game in Lincoln in 12 years a successful one, as the No. 12 Shockers posted a 9-4 decision over No. 15 Nebraska in front of a crowd of 5,606 at Hawks Field Tuesday evening.

The Shockers, who improved to 33-10 on the season, broke a 4-4 tie in the fifth as Logan Sorensen's sacrifice fly scored Brian Burgamy, who singled and stole second before advancing to third on a wild pitch by Waylon Byers.

Sorensen paced a 17-hit WSU attack, going 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs, including a three-run homer in the seventh that gave the Shockers a 9-4 advantage. Tanner Welsh added two hits and had three RBIs, as Wichita State picked up its seventh straight win and its first win in Lincoln since 1989.

The Huskers, who dropped to 30-16 and lost for only the fourth time at home this season, tied the score at 4-4 in the fourth as Jeff Blevins, who lead the Huskers with three hits, singled and stole second before Drew Anderson's single put runners on the corners. John Grose put NU within a run with an RBI single off WSU starter Mathew Jakubov before Shocker reliever Justin Maureau got Will Bolt to ground into a double play. The twin killing scored a run, but it would be the Huskers final tally of the evening, as Maureau and Tommy Hottovy combined to hold Nebraska off the scoreboard for the final six innings.

Maureau improved to 3-3 on the season, scattering six hits in four scoreless innings of relief, as the Huskers totaled 15 hits, but stranded 11 runners, including seven in the final four innings.

"We hit the ball well tonight, and I thought we played hard," Nebraska Coach Dave Van Horn said. "Our team really battled at the plate. It comes down to the fact that their bullpen did a lot better job than ours."

Byers (1-4) took the loss for the Huskers, allowing a run on two hits in an inning of relief, as the Huskers used six pitchers in the loss.

WSU extended the lead to 6-4 with an unearned run in the sixth on an RBI single by Brandon Green that scored Hawkins, who singled and moved to second on a passed ball. Sorensen then put the game out of reach in the seventh with a three-run homer of NU reliever Mike Sillman

The Shockers jumped ahead 1-0 in the top of the second as Welch's two-out RBI single to center scored Justin McCarty, who opened the frame with an infield single and advanced to second on a ground out.

The Huskers took its only lead of the evening in the bottom of the third on Brandon Eymann's two-run homer, his fourth of the season.

WSU regained the lead off NU starter Phil Shirek in the fourth, scoring three times, including a two-run double by Welch and run scoring double by Hawkins.

Shirek, who was 4-0 with a 0.75 ERA in his last five starts, allowed four runs on seven hits in 3.2 innings, but was not involved in the decision, as neither start got past the fourth.

The Huskers return to action this weekend when they travel to No. 5 Texas for a three-game series with the Longhorns. First pitch for Friday's series opener is set for 6:30 p.m.

Notes: Nebraska drops to 10-8 against ranked teams this season
