Sooners Hand Huskers Tough Loss
Oklahoma, which improved to 14-1 on the season and 3-0 in the Big 12, turned in a strong defensive effort, holding the Huskers to 24.6 shooting, the Huskers' lowest total ever at the Bob Devaney Sports Center, to remain tied with Texas on top of the Big 12 standings.
Hollis Price and Ebi Ere combined for 11 points in a 14-0 Sooner run to take a 33-19 lead into the locker room. Price, who finished with 13 points and seven rebounds, sparked the run with a pair of three-pointers, while Ere scored OU's final five points of the half, including a three-pointer to beat the halftime buzzer.
Ere led four Sooners in double figures with 16 points, while Aaron McGhee added a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Oklahoma, which has not lost since a 67-55 setback at Michigan State on Nov. 14, scored first seven points of the second half to push the lead to 21 before Brennon Clemmons ended the scoring drought with a free throw at the 15:28 mark, cutting OU's margin to 40-20.
The Huskers, who dropped to 8-7 overall and 1-3 in the Big 12, continued to struggle offensively, going nearly 13 minutes without a field goal until Brian Conkin's three-pointer with 14:24 remaining. NU finished the night connecting on seven of 30 three-point attempts.
The 6-10 sophomore forward provided most of the Huskers' offense in the early going, scoring eight points off the bench in the first seven minutes, as the Huskers took an early 13-6 advantage. Conklin, who had not scored in double figures since scoring 13 against Western Illinois on Dec. 5, finished with a team-high 14 points, including four three-pointers.
The lead would quickly evaporate, as the Sooners used a 9-0 run over the next three minutes to take a 15-13 advantage before John Robinson II's jumper ended the three-minute dry spell. The Huskers, which never led again, tied the score two more times before Oklahoma put the clamps on NU's offense the final five minutes of the half.
Robinson joined Conklin in double figures for Nebraska, scoring 10 points, but was just 2-of-7 from three-point range, as the loss marked the Huskers' worst home setback since a 27-point loss to Kansas State in the 1972-73 season.
Nebraska, which had lost only once in nine previous home games this season, closed to within 17 points at 56-38 after Wilson Thomas' basket at the 7:44 mark, but the visitors scored the next 10 points, including a four-point play by Price, to push the margin to 68-40.
Nebraska returns to action Saturday afternoon, when the Huskers travel to Austin, Texas, for a match-up with Big 12 co-leader Texas at 3 p.m. The game will be televised on Ch. 10/11 in Lincoln and Ch. 15 in Omaha.
