No. 10 Huskers Fall to Creighton
The Bluejays, who improved to 15-11 on the season, broke a 4-4 tie, as Tim Roth scored from second on a wild pitch and subsequent throwing error in the sixth, before tacking on two runs in both the seventh and eighth off reliever Steve Hale, who allowed five runs - four earned - on five hits to drop to 1-2 on the season.
Roth, who also belted a solo homer in the first, Tyler Davies and Tim Grandoville all hits two hits apiece in the win, the Bluejays first in seven meetings over NU in Omaha dating back to 1993.
Matt Garland, the sixth of seven Bluejay pitchers, earned the win, allowing two hits in a scoreless 1.1 innings to improve to 1-0, while Steve Grasley notched his third save of the season with 2.2 innings of no-hit ball.
Creighton jumped to a 3-0 lead off Husker starter Brian Duensing, scoring a run in the first on Roth's homer and adding two more in the fourth. The southpaw had retired seven in a row before Scott Allen lofted a one-out solo homer, off the screen in left before Ryan Fitzgerald's two-out RBI single to center scored Davies to extend the Jays lead to three runs
After being held to one hit in the first four innings, the Huskers, who dropped to 21-11 with the loss, came back, scoring two times in the top of the fifth. With one out, John Grose doubled to left center and moved to third on a balk before scoring on Joe Simokaitis' ground out to third. NU added a second run in the frame, as Daniel Bruce plated Simokaitis from first with an RBI double to left center.
Nebraska tied the game in the sixth, as Justin Seely, who was 1-for-2 and was hit twice, led off the inning with a double to center before Drew Anderson walked, putting runners on first and second. Will Bolt's sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position before Brandon Eymann's sacrifice fly to center knotted the game at 3-all.
Duensing pitched well, but was not involved in the decision, as he allowed three runs on five hits through the first fivre frames. The Millard South product tied a career high with six strikeouts and did not walk a batter.
Creighton regained the lead in bottom the sixth, scoring an unearned run off Hale, who had allowed just five earned runs in nine previous appearances this season. Roth opened the inning with a leadoff double before the Bluejay first baseman advanced to third on a wild pitch, one of three by Hale on the day, and scored as Grose's throw went high off the glove of Eymann into left field.
The Huskers had a golden opportunity to come back in the seventh, as Simokaitis and Jeff Leise had consecutive hits to open the inning, but Simokaitis was thrown out at second after making a wide turn at the bag. Daniel Bruce was hit by a pitch, putting runners on first and second, but Grasley came in and got Jed Morris to ground into an inning-ending double play, one of three twin killings the Bluejays turned in the win.
The Bluejays got a pair of insurance runs off Hale in the bottom of the seventh, as Joe Petro delivered a two-out triple to the gap in right center, scoring Tim Grandoville and Matt Daegas, to provide the hosts with a three-run cushion. CU pushed the final margin to five one inning later on a successful squeeze by Davies and a sacrifice fly by Fitzgerald.
The Huskers return to action tomorrow afternoon, when they play host to the Minnesota Golden Gophers at 3:05 at Hawks Field. The game will be on the Pinnacle Sports Network, including KLIN in Lincoln.
