Nebraska Runs Past Kansas State, 99-82

By NU Athletic Communications
Lincoln - Jake Muhleisen's career-high 21 points led five Huskers in double figures, as Nebraska nearly cracked the century mark for the first time in six seasons with a 99-82 win over Kansas State in front of a crowd of 7,275 at the Devaney Center Saturday afternoon.

A freshman guard from Lincoln, Muhleisen went 11-of-11 from the foul line and added five rebounds and five assists for the Huskers, who shot a season-high 56.5 percent from the floor to improve to 11-10 overall and 4-6 in the Big 12.

The Huskers turned in their best offensive effort of the year, hitting 12-of-24 from three-point range and 35-of-42 from the charity stripe, while committing just eight turnovers in the win. The 99 points was the most ever scored by a Husker team against Kansas State in a series that dates back to 1906, eclipsing the previous high of 92 set in 1968. It was also the most by NU in a game this season.

The Huskers and Wildcats traded the lead back and forth 11 times in the first half before the Huskers seized control with a 12-0 run, highlighted by three-pointers by Brian Conklin and Cary Cochran, to take a 39-29 advantage. NU, which hit 6-of-11 from three-point range in the first half, pushed the advantage to 49-38 at the break after Conklin's three-pointer with three seconds remaining in the period.

Conklin finished with 15 points, four rebounds and three blocks, while Cochran also added 15 points, including four three-pointers. John Robinson and Brennon Clemmons added 14 points apiece, as the Huskers topped their previous high of 86 against Iowa State set last month.

In the second half, the Huskers pushed the lead to as many as 21, at 69-48, after consecutive three-pointers by Robinson and Clemmons, and led by 16 with 7:27 remaining before KSU mounted a run of its own. The Wildcats used an 8-0 run to close to within 79-71 after a pair of Phineas Atchinson three-pointers with 6:37 left. KSU would not get any closer, as Muhleisen had a three-pointer and a pair of free throws to quickly extend the lead back to 13 and the Huskers, who hit 26-of 31 from the foul line in the second half, salted the game away at the foul line down the stretch.

Nebraska, which has hit at least 10 three-pointers in a contest for the eighth time this season, eclipsed the school team record for treys, as it has 195 through 21 games. The previous record was set by the 1994 squad, which had 194 three-pointers in 30 games.

Atchinson led five Wildcats (9-12, 3-7) in double digits with 21 points, including 6-of-10 from long range, as Kansas State hit 14-of-24 beyond the arc.

The Huskers return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 13, when NU plays host to Missouri at 7:05 p.m.

Nebraska postgame notes:
