Nebraska Falls To Kansas
Lincoln -- Nick Bradford scored 19 points off the bench to lead five Jayhawks in double figures as No. 23 Kansas broke open a 34-all halftime tie en route to a 83-58 win over Nebraska in front of 10,969 fans at the Bob Devaney Sports Center Wednesday evening.
Kansas outscored Nebraska 49-24 in the second half as the Jayhawks improved to 20-7 overall and 9-4 in the Big 12. Nebraska, which has lost six straight, drops to 10-16 overall and 3-10 in conference play.
After Nebraska played the Jayhawks to a standoff in the first half, KU freshman Kirk Hinrich's 3-pointer triggered a 9-0 Kansas run to start the half, giving the Jayhawks a 43-34 advantage.
Nebraska closed to within 48-43 after a Kimani Ffriend basket, but the Jawhawks responded with an 8-0 run over the next 4:55 to take control of the contest. In fact, the Huskers, who tied a season high with 28 turnovers, went 6:16 without a field goal until Larry Florence's tip in with 8:31 remaining.
Nebraska was unable to get the deficit into single digits as Kansas pulled away in the final five minutes.
Drew Gooden and Kenny Gregory each scored 13 for the Jayhawks, while freshmen Nick Collison and Kirk Hinrich added 12 and 10 points, respectively.
For Nebraska, the Huskers were led by sophomore guard Cary Cochran, who finished with 14 points, including 4-of-6 from 3-point range, and added seven assists. Cochran kept the Huskers in the game early, scoring 11 points of his points in the half as the Huskers shot 53 percent from the floor in before halftime.
Larry Florence and Kimani Ffriend also finished in double figures with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Ffriend, who had 23 points and 15 rebounds in the first meeting with KU, also pulled down 15 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season.
The Huskers close out the home schedule as they play host to Colorado this Saturday, Feb. 26, at 12:45 p.m. It also marks the final home game for senior Larry Florence, who will be honored in pregame ceremonies.
