Husker Men Lead Team Championships through First Day

Austin, Texas - Through the first three events at the first-ever USTCA National Invitational Team Championship on Friday, the Nebraska men's track and field team leads the 16-team pack, while the women stand in second. The unique two-day scored meet at Mike A Myers Stadium features the top two performers in each event from many of the nation's top all-around track and field programs.

Led by a second-place finish from senior Cory Lehman in the javelin (220-1) and a fourth-place finish from freshman Zach Josephson (214-0) in the day's final event, the Husker men jumped into an eight-point lead over Louisiana State and USC - both tied for second with 16 points.

Also scoring for NU was senior David Riggert and sophomore Nick Brethouwer in the hammer. Riggert finished sixth (189-7) to score three points, and Brethouwer nabbed two points with a seventh-place finish (186-9). On the track, the Nebraska men picked up six points from sophomore Marcus Witter, who took third in the 5,000 meters (14:34.10).

The Husker women were helped by All-American Cassi Morelock who tossed an NCAA automatic qualifying mark of 181-0 to win the javelin. The mark was Morelock's best of the season, and ranks third in the nation behind Texas-El Paso's Angeli Tsiolakoudi's mark of 188-3. Tsiolakoudi finished second to Morelock on Friday with a mark of 179-6.
