Huskers Blanked by Kansas on Tuesday

Nebraska suffered a 4-0 setback in its midweek matchup with Kansas on Tuesday night at Hawks Field at Haymarket Park.

Nebraska (19-22) totaled six hits, while Kansas (32-10) recorded four runs on nine hits.

Max Buettenback was 2-for-4 with a double, while Robby Bolin, Tyler Stone, Gabe Swansen, Case Sanderson and Will Jesske recorded a hit.

Tucker Timmerman dropped to 0-1 on the season after allowing two runs on two hits in two innings of work. Gavin Blachowicz and Pryce Bender combined to pitch four scoreless innings, dealing two innings apiece.

Drew Christo allowed a run on two hits in one inning, followed by Casey Daiss pitching 1.1 one-run innings. Grant Cleavinger tallied the final two outs for the NU bullpen.

The Huskers threatened in the first inning with runners on first and third with one out. Cayden Brumbaugh drew a four-pitch, followed by Buettenback’s single through the right side. The Jayhawks got out of the inning with a double play on a double-steal attempt of second and home, throwing out both baserunners on the play.

Kansas had runners on second and third with one out after a walk and a double, while a two-RBI single up the middle broke the scoreless tie in the top of the second inning.

Nebraska had a pair of baserunners in the bottom of the third after Jesske’s single through the left side and Bolin’s four-pitch walk with one out. KU eluded the damage with a pickoff and a strikeout to get out of the inning with the 2-0 lead.

The Jayhawks added an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning with an RBI double to right field, growing the lead to 3-0.

Bolin doubled down the left-field line with one out in the bottom of the eighth but was left stranded on second to keep the Big Red off the board.

Kansas opened the ninth inning with a double down the left-field line and added to its lead with a sacrifice fly to deep left field, stretching the lead to 4-0.

Nebraska returns to conference play this weekend, as the Huskers head east to Maryland for a three-game series. First pitch of Friday’s series opener between the Huskers and Terrapins is set for 5 p.m. CT on B1G+.
