Freshmen Power Huskers to Platte River Rumble Title

The Nebraska women’s cross country team secured its third team title of the season on Friday, while the Husker men claimed second at the Platte River Rumble in Ashland, Neb.

All five of NU’s scorers on the women’s side finished in the top ten, led by freshmen Berlyn Schutz and Ali Bainbridge. Schutz, a Lincoln-native, has led the Huskers in all four meets this season. She covered the course in 20:47.64, marking her third meet title of the season. Bainbridge, a newcomer from Sioux Falls, S.D., clocked a 21:04.16 to finish runner-up. Hannah Godwin (21:39.62), Taya Skelton (21:50.98)  and Emma Ralston (22:12.17) provided three consecutive finishes for the Big Red, placing 7-8-9. Hayley Trotter pitched in a 14th-place finish with a 22:31.10, while Lindsey Blehm finished 15th with a 22:33.87.

For the men, Trevor Acton took fifth with a time of 24:42.8. Sam Kirchner (24:49.0) and Cal Puskar (24:542) crossed the line next for NU, finishing seventh and 11th. Jerry Jorgenson ran a 25:16.6 to place 22nd, Grant Wasserman clocked a 25:31.0 to take 26th and Colby Erdkamp finished 28th with a time of 25:31.8.

The women finished with 27 team points. Omaha and Creighton placed second and third behind the Huskers. The men totaled 64 in their second-place finish, only behind Creighton.

Nebraska takes the course for the Big Ten Championships on Friday, Oct. 27 in Madison, Wis. Races begin at 9:45 a.m. (CT) on the Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course.
