Junior (2023-24)
Hamish Murray made an instant impact in his first season in Nebraska's lineup. The junior from Sydney, Australia led Nebraska with a team-best 72.69 stroke average over 29 rounds.
Murray opened his Nebraska career by leading the Huskers and tying for ninth individually with a 211 (-2) at the Bearcat Invitational in Cincinnati (Sept. 18-19). He began his Big Red career with back-to-back rounds of 69 (-2) at the Coldstream Country Club before capping the tournament with a 72.
He added a strong second lineup appearance for the Big Red by tying for 19th as Nebraska's No. 2 finisher with a 215 (-1) at the Badger Invitational (Oct. 1-3). Murray opened with a 69 (-3) on the par-72, 7,271-yard layout at the University Ridge Golf Club in Wisconsin. He added an even-par 72 in the second round, before closing with a 74. He helped the Huskers to a sixth-place team finish in an 18-team field that featured six 2023 NCAA Regional teams.
At the Purdue Fall Invitational (Oct. 9-19), Murray notched another top-20 performance by tying for 17th with a 214 (+1) as Nebraska's No. 2 finisher in the lineup. He started off with a 73 (+2) and 70 (-1) on the first day and followed with an even-par 71 in the final round. He helped the Huskers to a top-five team finish in West Lafayette.
Murray wrapped up the fall season in a tie for 33rd at the Everett Buick GMC Classic (Oct. 16-17) in Little Rock. He finished with an even-par 216 (73-71-72) on the tournament to close the fall with a team-best 71.33 stroke average over 12 rounds.
He continued to be a leader for the Huskers in the spring, tying for 19th at the rain-shortened Battle at Briar's Creek (Feb. 5-6) with a 146 (+2) after back-to-back rounds of 73. He managed a tie for 35th with a 215 (+5) at The Gator in Gainesville, Fla. (Feb. 16-17), which included a 69 (-1) in the second round.
Murray notched his fifth top-20 performance of the season with a tie for 19th with a 214 (-2) at The Johnnie-O at Sea Island (March 11-12). He matched his Nebraska career-best with a 69 (-3) for the fifth time in the second round, which was sandwiched between rounds of 73 and 72.
He managed a 30th-place finish with a 227 (+11) at the Calusa Cup in Naples, Fla. (April 8-9), before tying for 51st as Nebraska's No. 3 finisher at the Hawkeye Invitational (April 13-14). Murray closed with a season-best-matching 69 on the par-71, 7,197-yard layout of the Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa City to finish at 218 (+5).
Murray closed the season with a tie for 52nd at his first Big Ten Championship with a three-round total of 232 (+22) on a par-70, 7,240-yard layout at the Scioto Country Club in Columbus, Ohio. He managed rounds of 76, 80 and 76 to tie teammate Harry Crockett for Nebraska's third-best individual score. Murray helped the Huskers to a tie for seventh in a 14-team field.
Following the season, Murray's was named Nebraska's Big Ten Sportsmanship award winner. He was also named to the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team for his commitment to Nebraska's Life Skills program.
Murray also got off to a strong start in the classroom with a 4.0 grade-point average in the fall of 2023 to earn a spot on the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll.
Before Nebraska
Murray came to Nebraska after two strong collegiate seasons at NCAA Division II Cameron University in Lawton, Okla.
In 24 career tournaments, Murray never totaled higher than 227, while amassing six top-five finishes, nine top-10 performances and top-25 showings in 19-of-24 tournaments.
As a sophomore in 2022-23, Murray was named Cameron’s Athlete of the Year across all sports after posting a 71.95 stroke average over 37 rounds. He notched top-25 finishes in 11 of 12 tournaments, while breaking his own school record with 128 birdies on the season. He produced five top-10 finishes, including a season-best tie for third at the Hrnciar (Oct. 17-18). He added a top-five finish with a tie for fourth at the Lone Star Men’s Championship with a 213 that included a career-best-tying 67 for the fourth time in his career. Murray also fired a season-best 207 (68-72-67) to finish three-under-par in seventh place at the Ryan Palmer Foundation Invitational (Oct. 3-4).
He closed the season with a tie for eighth with a 214 (74-69-71) to finish two-under-par at the NCAA Division II West/South Central Regional (May 11-13). He finished the year ranked No. 3 in the region and No. 47 nationally by Golfstat, while helping Cameron to a final No. 15 national ranking by Golfstat.
A model of consistency, Murray’s highest three-round tournament total of the season was 222, which came with a tie for 11th at the Rattler Invitational (Feb. 20-21) and a tie for 14th at the King-Alfred Invitational (March 20-21).
He earned second-team Lone Star honors on the course and excelled in the classroom to win the Lone Star Academic Player of the Year award.
As a freshman at Cameron in 2021-22, Murray competed in all 13 tournaments for the Aggies while posting a team-best 72.70 stroke average. Murray was ranked No. 19 regionally and No. 166 in NCAA Division II by Golfstat.
The Lone Star Conference Freshman of the Year, Murray produced four top-five efforts, including a career-best runner-up finish at the Oak Tree Invite (March 14-15) with a 213 (72-69-72). He added third-place finishes at The Hrnciar (Oct. 18-19) and the DBU Men’s Classic (April 4-5), when he carded a career-best 206 (68-71-67) including a career-best, final-round 67 (-5).
He closed the year with a tie for 42nd with a 215 (71-71-73) at the NCAA West/South Central Regional (May 5-7). He set the Cameron record with 116 birdies as a freshman while tying the school single-season record with six eagles.
Murray went to Cameron after competing for the New South Wales Development Squad in Sydney, Australia. A 2020 New South Wales Sports Leadership Award winner, Murray fired a low round of 66 on his way to a tie for fifth at the Adidas Junior 6’s National Final. He was also the 2020 Pennant Hills Junior Champion before winning the 2021 Massey Park Cup Championship.
Personal
The son of David and Michelle Murray, Hamish was born June 26, 2002 in Sydney, Australia. He has an older sister, Madi. He is majoring in child, youth and family studies and earned a spot on the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll in the fall of 2023 with a perfect 4.0 GPA. He was Nebraska's Big Ten Sportsmanship award winner for men's golf, and he was named to the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team.
