Career
Tranmer came to Nebraska as a walk-on in 1979 and played both offensive guard and middle guard before redshirting in 1980. He ended up lettering in 1982 at middle guard behind starter Jeff Merrel, then the next season as a senior, Tranmer earned a starting spot at middle guard, was selected as lifter-of-the-year by his teammates, and was selected as a defensive co-captain for Nebraska. Tranmer was one of three 1983 Husker seniors to play his entire career without a scholarship.  

1983 (Senior) 
Tranmer served as one of the Huskers' defensive co-captains his senior season after working himself into a starting position along the defensive front wall the previous spring. He capped the spring by being named the 1983 lifter-of-the-year by his teammates. He lowered his 40 time from 5.26 to a middle guard-record 4.92 seconds while adding 20 pounds of body weight and increasing his bench press from 310 to 405 pounds. Tranmer had a career high five tackles on three different occasions during the 1983 season (Missouri, Iowa State, Kansas). He had 44 total tackles (26 solo), 3 tackles for loss, and 1 sack.  

1982 (Junior)
Tranmer lettered as a reserve behind Jeff Merrell in 1982. He racked up 5 total tackles (3 solo) and had 1 sack.  

1981 (Sophomore)
Tranmer redshirted this season.

1980 (Freshman)
Tranmer walked on his freshman season and played both offensive guard and middle guard for the freshman team.  

At Lyons HS
Tranmer was an all-state performer at Lyons High School and earned the defensive player-of-the-game award in the 1979 Nebraska Shrine Bowl. Tranmer was also a standout wrestler at Lyons High.

Mike is the son of Gary and Neva Tranmer, and was born in Omaha on July 29, 1961.
