Career Wrapups

Meghan Smith was one of the Huskers’ top reserves at middle blocker during the 2004-05 seasons, helping NU to 63 wins and pair of Big 12 titles. She appeared in 11 matches during the 2005 season, averaging 1.36 blocks and 1.18 kills per game. Smith enjoyed the best match of her career in her first career start at No. 5 Minnesota, delivering career highs in both kills (eight) and blocks (seven), while hitting a team-high .312 in a five-game triumph. A former Volleyball Magazine Fab 50 selection, Smith appeared in eight matches as a freshman, totaling one kill and one block in limited duty. A three-time member of the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll, Smith was an academic All-American nominee in 2005.

2005: Outlook
After a season of adjusting to college volleyball, sophomore middle blocker Meghan Smith will look to play an increased role in 2005 • Considered by the coaching staff as one of the most athletic middle blockers at NU in recent memory • Continued to make strides during her first season, appearing in eight matches behind All-American Melissa Elmer and U.S. National Team player Tracy Stalls • Saw extensive action at middle blocker during the spring, as Stalls missed time after knee surgery • Had five kills and four blocks in a sweep of Minnesota in her first spring action • Impressed the coaches with her work ethic and competitiveness • Will have an opportunity to push for playing time, as Stalls works her way back into the lineup.
“Meghan was our most improved player in the spring,” NU Head Coach John Cook said. “She is the quickest and most explosive athlete in our program and broke several testing records in the spring. Now she has to use that to become a great volleyball player in our program. Two-a-days will be important for her as she shows her teammates that she is ready to contribute.”

2004: Freshman Season
Smith saw limited duty backing up All-American Melissa Elmer and Tracy Stalls at the middle blocker position • Appeared in nine matches, including four in conference play, recording her only kill of the year in a win over Iowa State on Oct. 16 • Posted her first career block in the win over Iona in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Dec. 3.

High School
Smith was a three-sport standout at Sidney High School, starring in volleyball, basketball and track • Was named the High School Athlete of the Year by the Scottsbluff Star Herald in 2004 for her exploits • Garnered two-time All-Nebraska honors from the Omaha World-Herald, including first-team accolades as a senior • Was a four-year starter for Coach Jack Thorpe and was named to  Volleyball Magazine’s Fab 50, recognizing the top high school players in the nation • Topped Class B in kills (6.15 per game), blocks (2.54 per game) and aces (0.80 per game), while ranking among the state leaders with a .445 hitting percentage as a senior • Led Sidney HS to a 21-11 record and a berth in the state tournament • Paced all high school players in the state in blocks as a junior (202) and senior (191), setting an all-class record with 604 career blocks • Played club volleyball with the Panhandle Volleyball Club before joining the Nebraska Juniors in 2003, playing alongside current Huskers Dani Mancuso, Dani Busboom and Christina Houghtelling • Was a four-time state qualifier in track, running in the 100- and 200-meters and on relays • Earned all-conference accolades, helping Sidney’s 1,600- and 400-meter relays to second- and third-place finishes, respectively, at the state meet • Was a first-team all-conference selection on the hardwood in 2004, and captured honorable-mention all-state honors from the Omaha World-Herald as a junior and senior • Carried a 3.70 GPA in high school and was a member of the honor roll at Sidney High School.
