At Nebraska

One of the finest lineman to ever play at Nebraska, Barnes earned consensus All-America honors in 1965. Many coaches and scouts labeled Barnes as “one of the finest football players in the country”. In 1965 Barnes repeated as a All-Big 8 selection and led the Blackshirt lineman with 55 tackles. Barnes was nicknamed “Crazy Horse” and also blocked a punt against Missouri his senior year.

Moved to the No. 1 right tackle spot his junior year after lettering as a sophomore at the center position. Earned All-Big 8 honors as a junior and caught the eyes of professional scouts and All-American nominators. Barnes played both ways at Nebraska, took over the middle guard position against Minnesota in the second game of his junior year and became the rock of the Blackshirts. As a junior he only trailed linebacker Mike Kennedy in defensive statistics, Barnes had 20 unassisted tackles and 29 assisted tackles for a total of 49.

Gained respect from the Husker faithful as a sophomore for his bruising tackles on ball-carries on kickoffs.

Before Nebraska (Chicago St. Mel)
Earned two letters and All-State mention for Coach John Hosinski.
