2021 (Freshman)
Daniel Cerni started three games at punter in 2021 and punted in a total of five games. After punting five times at Illinois, Cerni averaged 40 yards on two punts against Fordham, including one punt downed inside the 20-yard line. In the win over Buffalo, Cerni placed three of his five punts inside the Bulls' 20-yard line. Cerni came off the bench and placed two of his three punts at No. 20 Michigan State inside the Spartans' 20-yard line. His final action of the season came against No. 17 Iowa, when Cerni had a career long 47-yard punt in the fourth quarter.
2020 (Covid Season)
Cerni was a potential candidate to compete for the starting punter position as a true freshman in 2020, but he suffered a season-ending injury during preseason camp and sat out his first year.
Before Nebraska (Prokick Australia)
Cerni was a late addition to Nebraska's scholarship freshman class, as he announced his decision to join the Huskers in May. He is the first Australia native to play for Nebraska since 1994, and Cerni is believed to be just the second Aussie ever to play football at NU.
Cerni honed his punting skills through Prokick Australia, which was created in 2007 "to help guide and transition Australian athletes to perform at the college/NFL level. Prokick Australia has produced five Ray Guy Award winners while sending dozens of punters to play college football.
Personal
Daniel was born on Jan. 25, 2000, and is the son of Stjepan and Gordana Cerni. He is majoring in international business. Cerni is the first Australian to play for Nebraska since 1994 and just the second Aussie ever to play football for NU, joining receiver Brett Popplewell (1992-94).
